This uses a real, free AI model to look at your black & white photo and work out sensible colours for the sky, skin, grass and everything else in it, then paints them in. It all happens on your own device.

Worth knowing: more advanced (and more expensive) professional colourisation services do exist, sometimes with a human touching up the result by hand. This tool is completely free and uses a genuine AI colourisation model, not a paid one, so results will not always be perfect, but for many people it is more than enough to bring old photos, and the people and places in them, to life in a way they may never have seen before. Because everything runs on your own device, your photo is never uploaded anywhere. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI model (around 75MB), which can take a little while on a slow connection; after that it is instant.

1. Choose a photo. Tap "Choose a Photo" below and pick an old black & white photo from your phone, tablet or computer.

2. Add colour. Tap "Add Colour With AI". The first time you do this, your browser downloads the AI model (about 75MB), so it can take a little while; after that it is instant.

3. Adjust if you like. Use the "Colour strength" slider to make the colour lighter or fuller, and tick "Show original photo" to compare before and after.

4. Download. Tap "Download My Photo" to save your coloured photo, ready to share.
