Following football with AI: how to get more from the game you love

Football has a way of staying with people. You might have stood on a terrace as a child, followed a club through decades of ups and downs, or simply enjoyed the World Cup every four years with the rest of the country. Whatever kind of fan you are, there is always more to the game than any one of us knows.

This is where AI turns out to be a wonderful companion. Think of it as a knowledgeable friend who never tires of your questions, never makes you feel silly for asking and will happily explain the offside rule for the fifteenth time. You do not need any technical skill. You simply type a question as you would say it out loud.

What follows is a framework of five things you can ask AI about, with example prompts you can copy word for word or adapt to your own club.

The history

Football as we know it was shaped in Victorian England, when a tangle of local rules was gradually written into one game. International football holds many of our warmest sporting memories too. Whether you watched a famous tournament live or only heard about it from your parents, AI can take you back there, fill in the details and tell you what became of the players afterwards.

‘Talk me through the story of England winning the World Cup in 1966 as if I were hearing it for the first time, then tell me what happened to the players in later life.’

How the game works today

The modern football calendar can be baffling, even for lifelong fans. Leagues, cups, play-offs, promotion and relegation, European competitions and international breaks all overlap through the season. If you have ever wondered how a team qualifies for Europe or why the fixture list suddenly pauses for a fortnight, you are in good company.

Rather than nodding along, ask AI to explain it. It is also very good at practical questions, such as how to find out when your team is playing or which competitions matter most to a club at your team’s level.

AI can give you a proper portrait of almost anyone who has played or managed the game, from household names to the cult figures only your club’s supporters remember.

This works in both directions. You can ask about a legend you watched decades ago, or ask it to explain who a current player is and why everyone is talking about them. It is a lovely way to bridge conversations with children and grandchildren who follow the modern game.

Managers deserve a mention of their own. Football has produced generations of them, from quiet tacticians to touchline volcanoes, and their ideas about how the game should be played have shaped everything you see on a Saturday. Asking AI to compare two of them is a very enjoyable way into the subject.

‘Compare two famous English football managers from different eras. What did each believe about how the game should be played, and how did their teams reflect their personalities?’

The technicalities

Every fan has a gap or two. Perhaps the offside rule has always been hazy, or you hear commentators talk about a ‘low block’ or a ‘false nine’ and quietly let it wash over you. Modern football has also added a layer of technology and statistics, from video refereeing to numbers like ‘expected goals’, that nobody ever sits you down and explains.

AI will explain any of it, at whatever pace suits you, and you can keep asking follow-up questions until it clicks. Nobody is watching and nobody is judging.

A phone or tablet within reach during a match turns AI into your own personal pundit. When something puzzling happens, describe it and ask. You will often have a clearer explanation than the commentators manage before the game has even restarted.

The future

Asking AI about this is a good way to stay ahead of the conversation at the club, the pub or the family dinner table.

Because the game changes quickly, this is one area where it pays to ask AI to be careful about dates and to check anything important against an official source.

‘What changes to football’s rules and competitions are currently being discussed or introduced? Tell me what stage each one is at, and be clear about anything you are not certain of.’

The trick that makes every answer better

Here is the technique I recommend more than any other. Before AI answers, ask it to question you first.

‘I would like help following football more closely. Before you suggest anything, please ask me whatever you need to know about my team, how long I have supported them and what I most enjoy about the game.’

The difference is remarkable. Instead of a general answer that could apply to any fan, you get something shaped around your club, your memories and the way you like to watch. It takes a minute longer and it is almost always worth it.

One honest note about facts and figures

AI is a brilliant explainer, though it can get sporting facts, dates and statistics wrong, and it sometimes states them with great confidence. Treat any specific score, record or transfer fee as a starting point rather than gospel, and check anything that matters against your club’s official website or another trusted source. For understanding the game, its stories and its language, it is hard to beat.
